We’re back with our Mouthpiece Monday videos aimed at making you a better scuba diver. This week, we’re reinforcing a skill that you should have picked up at OW level. It’s a land skill, and one that, if made into a habit, will improve your diving considerably. I’m talking about: The Debrief!
We’re talking what is an effective debrief for your scuba dives, when should debriefs happen and who should be involved and most importantly: why bother!
Also, I debrief chronologically. Here are the questions I ask myself and my buddy after every dive:
How did the pre-dive safety check go? Any findings?
How was the entry?
Descent and equalization?
Fundamentals: buoyancy, trim, propulsion, breathing. How did you do at each?
Did your dive equipment work flawlessly?
Did you handle the conditions or did the conditions handle you?
How was the navigation? Communication? Orientation?
Did we end the dive at the right time?
How did the ascent and safety stop go?
How about the exit?
What was your SAC rate for the dive?
Tell the story of the dive as it happened. Highlight anything that went wrong or could be improved upon. Ultimately, if you’re watching this video, it’s because you want to better your diving. I promise you, this is one more tool for your toolbox of skills that will help you improve dive upon dive.
Thanks for watching!
